The Democratic Left Movement (DLM), is a political party in Lebanon, officially launched in September 2004. It was founded by a leftesit group that includes several former members of the communist party and other communist organizations, as well as ex-activists in Lebanese leftist parties in addition to independent politicians.
The Preparatory Committee arranged for a general assembly in which a founding committee was elected including Nadim Abdel Samad as president, and Elias Atallah the main driving force behind the movement, and Hikmat Eid, Anju Rihan, Ziad Majed and Ziad Saab as members.
The movement is a part of the March 14 Alliance.
At the last legislative elections, May and June 2005, DLM won one seat in the Lebanese Parliament through its Leader Elias Atallah, becoming the first leftist secular political party to be represented in the parliament.
On June 2, 2005, Samir Kassir, one of the founders of the movement, and a prominent Lebanese journalist and political analyst, was assassinated.
On April 29, 2007, elections were held within the movement to elect the new members of the national assembly, based on proportional representation. Two lists competed, one supported by Elias Atallah, and representing the leadership's rhetoric at that time, and the other containing 14 all-youth candidates , named Keep Left, calling in its program for the movement not to lose its leftist identity while insisting on being part of March 14. The youth list managed to gather 34% of the votes, enabling all the list to be elected to the national assembly.
